Individually Managed Accounts - Case Studies

IMA Case Study 1 - Managing share investments effectively

Richard is a busy corporate executive who spends much of his time traveling within Australia and overseas. Although blessed with a good income and shares in the company he works for, the reality is he does not have time to manage his share investments effectively. By this we mean the decisions on what to buy and sell and the ongoing administration. Nor can he be contacted with certainty during trading hours.

Opening an IMA allowed Richard to hand over all the management and administration of his portfolio to Leyland Private Asset Management, including his company shares.

"The big advantage is the knowledge that my investment manager is looking out for my personal investment interests at all times. As they watch the market and my portfolio each day they are far better placed to take action rather than wait for my availability"

"I love being able to log on from wherever I am and see exactly what I own, what price I paid, and what my capital gains situation is", Richard says.

IMA Case Study 2 - Reducing risk through diversification

Working as a medical professional, Peter had developed a share portfolio primarily focused on pharmaceutical and biotech companies as he understood this sector and therefore felt comfortable investing in them. He had self managed his investments for a number of years with some investments proving to be successful.

Peter now says, "I realise now that only investing in the medical sector put me in a risky situation."

Working with Leyland Private Asset Management has allowed Peter to keep his investments in the medical sector but also to broaden his exposure into sectors that he was not as familiar with.

There's a high level of comfort in knowing the share experts look at my investments every day, and that they have knowledge across a broad range of sectors," says Peter.

IMA Case Study 3 - Taking the emotion out of investing

Mark is a property developer married with two children. With $500,000 in a low-interest bearing bank account, he waited for the spare time he needed to invest his money “properly”.

In addition to not having the time to invest his money well, Mark identified the need for a professional who is an expert at investing large sums of money. There is a real danger investing your own money, “If you’re going to build a house, you need a builder, not a butcher, don’t you” Mark points out.

Having spoken with a few brokers and fund managers, he decided that “Leyland Private Asset Management ticked all the right boxes.”

The key benefits for Mark are that his investment manager and the IMA structure take the emotion out of investing. Mark knows his weakness would be to hold onto a stock that was struggling, preferring to wait until it “comes good”. He likes the fact that the IMA structure allows Leyland Private Asset Management to make the “hard calls” which may sometimes mean taking a loss in the short term. What’s important he says is that “It’s been proven to me that these guys can make me money, and that works for me!”

IMA Case Study 4 - Self-Managed Super Funds

Improving Performance

At Leyland Private Asset Management we are experiencing more and more clients choosing to invest their self-managed super fund (SMSF) via an Individually Managed Account (IMA).

Bill established a SMSF to realise the numerous tax benefits available and to have control over where and how his monies are invested. In his late 40s, Bill believed he would have the time to manage his SMSF; however he soon realised the challenges in finding the time to execute, manage and administer a share portfolio effectively.

Bill approached Leyland Private Asset Management six months ago. We discussed his preferred share portfolio profile for his SMSF, which included reasonable diversification, capital growth and an exclusion from investing in property due to other investments in that sector. When you consider the time I was allocating trying to find the right shares to invest in, or divest of, combined with the time I spent on administration. Leyland's fees are minimal and they have so far out performed my investments in every sector.”

IMA Case Study 5 - International Investor

Colin lives in Singapore and has investments throughout the world.

Colin was attracted to the Australian share market due to its stable government, strong economy, low exchange rate and booming resources sector, but Colin wanted a professional on the ground looking after his investments.

Leyland Private Asset Management was able to offer Colin a strategy to suit his particular requirements to be overweight resources with a skew towards iron ore and coal – with some exposure to up and coming uranium companies. Colin also wanted some exposure to the banking sector, but he didn’t necessarily need franking credits as he lives offshore.

Colin is able to log on and see how his investments are performing and contact his Leyland portfolio manager at any time to discuss his investments or change his investment strategy.
